“My business, Chiggs Ltd, (www.chiggs.co.uk ) wholesales my own inventions- the Baby Feed Wheel, Baby Medicine Wheel and the Get Well Wheel. These are parenting products, cards and gifts with a numbered dial to keep track of baby’s feed and everyone’s medicine times!

The inspiration for my first invention, the Baby Feed Wheel, came in October 2005 when I was visiting a friend who’d just had a baby. In the midst of sleep deprivation, she couldn’t remember her little boy’s last feed time, so I jokingly suggested she used a car parking disc to set the time whenever he had a feed. A couple of days later I took round a little ‘homemade’ version (covered in blue paper with a little picture stuck on the front!)

Remembering my own ‘hazy days’ after my daughter Holly’s birth, when I would write feed times down on pieces of paper, I realised what a useful idea this would be for new parents.

After two months of design, research and sourcing suppliers I secured a design patent, commissioned the first print run of Baby Feed Wheels, and launched the website, www.chiggs.co.uk

I had designed the Baby Feed Wheel in blue, pink and lemon with “to” and “from” printed on the reverse; so as well as being a thoroughly useful product for parents, it could also be sent as a congratulations card or ‘new baby’ gift, just as I had made for my friend.

The Baby Medicine Wheel followed soon after. Whilst on holiday with friends and their little boy, he was teething and needed medicine. Our friends used a Baby Feed Wheel to record the time of each dose so that they knew when the next dose would be due. Shortly after the holiday I contacted the Patent Office with my second product!

The Get Well Wheel completes the Chiggs range, (which are all printed in the UK and hand finished in Harrogate). With ‘time of last medicine’ printed on the front, older children and adults of all ages can monitor their medicine times whether recovering from illness, or taking regular medication.

I’ve found developing my own inventions into a business incredibly rewarding. It’s a long way from my previous career as an Air Stewardess, and has been an incredible learning curve! I’ve had great support from my husband Andrew, and my daughter Holly, now 6, is an important part of the business. She’s handed leaflets out at trade fairs, licked stamps, stuck stickers and if she had her way she would be allowed to answer the ‘phone, too!

Great Children’s Mirrors from Mirrors4kids Website

June17

Came across a super website this week called mirrors4kids.co.uk. Their range of mirrors work well with children’s bedrooms, bathroms, or any room that would look good with a funky mirror. I love the affordable £15 butterfly mirror, (below) which is made of acrylic. Acrylic mirrors are lighter, stronger and safer than glass. They are laser cut at the mirrors4kids workshop in Huntingdon. Appropriate details and patterns can then be screen printed onto the mirrors.

As well as the lovely butterfly kids mirror, there is also a cute book worm design, a cool childrens car mirror and a sun shaped mirror. The friendly looking crocodile mirror would look fabulous in any children’s bedroom or ensuite with a jungle or safari theme as would the lion, elephant, hippo or giraffe mirror. The dancing star mirror could look good in a space themed bedroom, and the purple dippy dino mirror is another favourite of mine. Kids who love bunny rabbits will be thrilled to receive the Easter Bunny mirror and the flower shaped mirror is very attractive.

Fairy themed bedrooms are always popular with little girls, the fairy and mushroom mirror above would suit this room well. My daughter would love the pig, teddy bear and pony mirrors and my son would like the football, rugby ball or space ship mirror – there really is something for everyone!

THE place for children’s mirrors is definately mirrors4kids.co.uk. Check it out today.

Toy Safety

November27

Just been reading a great article on safe toys for children – thought I’d share it with you. http://www.wisebread.com/in-search-of-safety-a-moms-8-step-guide-to-toy-selection-and-everyday-use

‘Best’ Toys

May16

If you are wondering which toys are “best” for your little one, I’ve done a little research and come up up with a couple of sites which can help you:

For Parents By Parents is a lovely bright and colourful parenting website and features a great list of toy recommendations which have been sent in by parents:

http://www.forparentsbyparents.com/info_entain_yourbesttoys.html

We actually have some of the toys mentioned on our own website Tish Tash Toys like the stacking cups from Early Learning Centre. Our equivalent is the Tolo Rainbow Stacker which is a bit more funky and colourful and suitable from just 6 months of age.

Shape Sorters were also mentioned and we do a few of them now and our favourite new one is the Flower Sorting and Sound Box. This attractive flower shaped sorting box has a magnetic lid and six coloured co-ordinated shape blocks which contain beads that make different sounds when shaken. It’s ideal for learning about shapes and colours and the posting activities will also help develop manipulative skills, particularily for children with special needs.

Another website which you may well have heard of is MumsNet and they have a whole section devoted to product reviews. Here is the link to their children’s toy reviews section:

The Mumsnet top toys include

The Manhattan Toy Whoozit

The Pintoy Baby Walker with Bricks

Wooden Bricks

Playhouses

Shopping List Game

It’s really interesting to read about the toys which parents have recommended themselves although it is hard to find actual toy review sites. Here’s one I did look at though – which I’ve contacted to find out more about so watch this space!

This is what they have to say for themselves….

“We realised that all of us really disliked many of the simple and garish electronics that cause lots of toys to shout ‘ABC’ or ‘123′ in a brash accent with plinky plonky music applied, and then for the manufacturer to claim that these were ‘educational’. It seems very few manufacturers have any idea what is developmental at all, so we have been going about finding more out by reading recent publications and talking to teachers and other eductional experts.”

I think we like where “Whattoy.com” is coming from and will hopefuly hear more from them soon…
